A few of my own notes on the 1850 Census. First off, there is a partial index/transcription of this census available free on the internet here . Its on Angela Knellers' site. I have not gone through each of the index listings one by one but I would highly suggest that if you use them and find them helpful, you should write the folks who spent the time to put those together and thank them.

I will make a comment on the Bearfield Twp. index, since I did look at that one. It is my opinion that this census actually starts on what I'll call page 265B, not 265A as that index shows it. A fact I really hadn't payed attention to when looking at this microfilm before is that these census records are copied from a book. That fact is quite visible when you look at the films. If a page on the left is considered "A" and on the right, "B", it looks clear to me that Bearfield starts on a right side page, hence 265B. The other township indexes may be similar, as I said, I did not go through each one. This is important as I have numbered my pages in the order that I believe is correct. So if you're using an index to find the page here, they are not going to match exactly. You may have to page forward or backward to find the name you're looking for.

If you're familiar with these microfilm images, you might also note that I have made an attempt to "straighten up" any pages that were off kilter. Nearly all of them were (some ridiculously so). I also cropped each photo individually and tried to optimize them to be as legible as possible. I apologize for the large size (each image averages about 550K), but I felt if I was going to spend the time on this, might as well make them good. Its not perfect, but I gave it a good shot. Another item you might find interesting (especially if you've used Ancestry.com) is the the number of pages I might show for a particular township may not match what you seen elsewhere. I discovered in scanning each of these that the original microfilm has a number of pages duplicated. I have eliminated any duplicates in this version.

At some point in the future, I will make an attempt to add a text version of the Surnames on each page so that the Search engine will find the names, but just getting these 500+ pages scanned and ready for the web has taken me probably close to 100 hours. Adding the names is just too much for now. So, to reiterate, the Search engine will not work for these pages.

I hope you find this useful.
